How to Stick to Your New Year's Resolution

Jacquelyn Garcia - Wednesday, January 11, 2017

You may have started out the year strong and more determined than ever, but by this point in January are you really feeling like eating only celery for the rest of the year? Probably not. And it’s not your fault! We have society and media encouraging us to make resolutions & keep them all year long (which is great!), but it turns out these resolutions aren’t always realistic. Not to worry! Here’s how to tailor your New Year’s resolutions and set yourself up for success!

1. Break down your resolution.

Instead of aiming straight for the finish line, set checkpoints for yourself. Choose one smaller goal for every month or two; with a more realistic vision, you’re more likely to stay on track. For example, if your resolution is to read 50 books by December, pace yourself and take on a couple each month and you’ll be well on your way in no time!

2. Create a plan.

After setting those checkpoints, assign dates in a planner when you think you should have one book completed. Do this for the next few months and work your way to year’s end because having a visual plan is more effective than a mental one.

3. Buddy up.

It’s no secret that having a friend on board is more fun. They’ll keep you accountable and encourage you when you’re veering off track. They may even give you some competition so grab a friend and tackle your resolutions together!

4. Track your progress.

If you’ve been following the steps above, you’re definitely seeing progress. Write it down, take photos, document it how you feel fit. Let it serve as a reminder that you’re succeeding at your goal and it’s sure to motivate you to keep it up!

5. Reward yourself.

Don’t forget to treat yourself along the way. Give yourself a break from all the hustle when you’ve reached a checkpoint. It’ll keep you striving towards your ultimate goal.

With these 5 tips, you’ll be well on your way to fulfilling your New Year’s resolutions and still on track months down the road! Happy New Year!
